The Emigration of Yemeni Women: Challenges and Societal Perspectives

Sawt Al-Amal (Voice of Hope)Alia Mohammed

Yemeni women face increasing challenges due to the ongoing crises in the country, which have deepened economic and social pressures on all segments of society, especially women. This situation has led many girls and women to emigrate in search of better educational and employment opportunities, resulting in a noticeable increase in the emigration rates of Yemeni women in recent years.

The emigration of Yemeni women sparks widespread debate in society. While some view emigration as a legitimate right for women to improve their lives and contribute to supporting their families, others consider it a challenge to social and cultural values that restrict women’s freedom of movement. Opinions differ among social groups; while young generations support this trend and see it as necessary to overcome economic and educational challenges, older generations express reservations, believing that a woman’s emigration may expose her to risks or affect the family’s reputation.

A Journey from Yemen to India

Sumayya Yahya, one of the Yemeni girls who chose to emigrate after 2014, sought to improve her educational circumstances, which deteriorated due to the ongoing conflict. She decided to go to India to continue her studies, despite the social and psychological challenges she faced during her journey.

Sumayya says: “My decision to emigrate and travel wasn’t easy, despite my parents’ approval. I faced challenges and difficulties due to my relatives’ disapproval of this decision; they considered a girl’s emigration alone to be outside the framework of Yemeni customs and traditions, but I stuck to my decision and insisted on implementing it.”

Her journey began from Sana’a to Aden by land, then from Aden to Djibouti by sea, and finally to India by air. The journey was full of difficulties, especially since she was traveling alone, crossing geographical and social boundaries to reach her goal.

She added: “Despite my insistence on emigrating and traveling to find a better place for education, I felt fear because I was embarking on a new experience in my life, and I didn’t know what awaited me in the end. However, my belief in my ability to overcome challenges to achieve my dream was greater than my fears.”

After traveling for days, Sumayya finally reached her destination and began a new phase of her educational life. Her initial fears turned into a determination to succeed and achieve her dreams, proving that she is capable of overcoming obstacles and achieving her goals despite the difficulties.

Change v/s Traditional Constraints

Yemeni society is known as one of the most conservative societies in the Arab world. Traditional values still dominate the perceptions of many of its members regarding the role and status of women. The emigration of Yemeni women for study or work is a controversial issue that raises discussions about its acceptance in light of these values, which often place women within the framework of the family and its traditional responsibilities.

Some families believe that a woman’s emigration for work or study abroad conflicts with cultural and religious values. A woman’s role is seen as confined to the family, and this view considers a woman’s departure may lead to a change in family roles and expose her to risks that threaten her reputation and safety in her country of emigration.

Lina Qais, a university student, believes that despite some positive changes in the role of women recently, Yemeni society still retains its traditional view that restricts women. She says: “We still face segments of society that view women traditionally and stereotypically, confining their role to the family and its responsibilities.”

She adds: “Some families see the emigration of Yemeni women abroad as a blatant challenge to cultural, religious, and social values, and prefer that women remain at home due to their concern for their reputation and safety in the country of emigration, believing that they will face many risks alone.”

She also points out that women who wish to emigrate face significant challenges in obtaining the support of their families. This rejection leads to conflicts within the family that prevent women from taking steps towards emigration, and these conflicts remain a stumbling block for Yemeni women seeking self-fulfillment in a society governed by deeply rooted traditions and customs.

Social Expectations and Future Changes

Yemeni women face significant social pressures regarding their roles. Societal expectations often define their roles within the family framework, reinforcing the idea that education and work should only serve to improve the family’s situation, not self-actualization. This pressure restricts women’s ambitions and creates additional challenges for their personal and professional choices.

Societal expectations represent a major obstacle to women’s emigration, causing a disparity between traditional cultural values and modern changes. Although emigration may offer a chance for a better future for everyone, this opportunity faces criticism focused on the threat to cultural values, thus reducing its acceptance.

However, women’s emigration has positive implications that can contribute to positive societal change. These include improving the local economy; emigrant women contribute through their acquired expertise and knowledge, transferring successful experiences from abroad to the community, thus improving the overall situation and raising awareness of the importance of women’s empowerment. Furthermore, it changes the traditional social view of women’s roles, leading to greater acceptance of their role in development.

Yemeni society’s acceptance of women’s emigration is a crucial step towards achieving equality and social justice. This shift in expectations helps build a better future for women, benefiting society as a whole. Societal support for women’s roles in education and work, both at home and abroad, will enhance their capabilities and allow them to make real contributions to building a more inclusive and advanced society.

The Personal Experiences

The experiences of Yemeni women abroad vary between great successes and diverse challenges. While some achieve tangible accomplishments in various fields of education and professions, others face difficulties adapting to new environments and cultures. However, these successes serve as inspiration for many, encouraging more women to take similar steps to achieve their ambitions.

Changing the traditional view of Yemeni women’s emigration remains an urgent necessity to ensure sufficient support for them. This change is one of the most effective ways to guarantee women access to educational and professional opportunities that contribute to building their futures and achieving their goals outside the country.

To achieve this, Yemeni society must be educated and made aware of the benefits of women’s emigration, including their role in promoting education and professional development, and its positive impact on the family and society. Efforts should be made to provide psychological and social support programs for families concerned about their daughters’ emigration, sharing success stories of Yemeni women abroad to reduce fears. Training and educational programs should be developed to help women acquire the necessary skills in specific fields, enhancing their employment opportunities outside Yemen. Policies should be revised to guarantee women’s rights to emigrate and work abroad.

On the other hand, effective mechanisms must be established to provide legal protection for emigrant women, including providing a safe environment during and after emigration, protecting women from any violations they may face in their country of emigration, and providing psychological and social support to help them adapt to the challenges they face, and strengthening cooperation between various entities. Achieving these goals requires cooperation between the local community, civil society organizations, and women’s families, and a change in societal views towards women’s roles, contributing to comprehensive social progress.

Therefore, empowering Yemeni women to emigrate and work safely is an investment in a better future, especially during this difficult period for the country, not only for women but for society as a whole.
